Creating user-friendly websites that provide important information to the public |
| Having a usable and user friendly website typically delivers multiple beneficial outcomes such as an increase in online sales, or traffic to a website, however at times the usability of a particular website can have impact on the safety and wellbeing of individuals. This is often the case with many emergency services websites, and recent work which we have done in this space has only served as a reminder of the importance of usability in this area.
From our experience with conducting research in this space here are some of the main points to consider when providing important information to the public (e.g. emergency services websites). Read full article |

New Trends in Financial Services
Over the past few months, UsabilityOne has been undertaking a number of projects for clients in the Financial Services sector. Observations from these projects have been interesting and indicate a growing trend in user confidence in their financial service provider. We have found that while many users are still concerned with their security when transacting online, a growing number of users are becoming more comfortable with performing more complex financial transactions, and gaining confidence in the online services provided by their financial provider. We look forward to keeping an eye on this trend in 2012, as our work in the financial sector continues. |

The UX Research Plan that Stakeholders Love
UX practitioners, both consultants and in house, sometimes conduct research, be it usability testing or user research with a generative goal, research requires planning. To make sure product managers, developers, marketers and executives (let's call them stakeholders) act on UX research results, planning must be crystal clear, collaborative, fast and digestible. Long plans or no plans don't work for people. You must be able to boil a UX research plan down to one page. If you can't or won't, then you won't get buy-in for the research and its results.

In the past five years, the world of mobile web design has quickly evolved. Applications of today push boundaries we would never have imagined before the development of the modern smartphone. For UX professionals, these changes provide some fascinating opportunities. On the other hand however, quick evolution also presents some real challenges. Rules and processes from five years ago are no longer sufficient and we sometimes find ourselves outside our comfort zone, moving from our well practised techniques to improvisations. This article outlines both the huge opportunities and potential challenges for UX professionals exploring mobile design in 2012.
